Please help - which telescope to buy?

Postby firozastro » Tue Mar 11, 2014 10:34 pm

Hi,

I am new to this forum, well I own a Celestron PowerSeeker 70AZ Telescope

http://www.celestron.com/astronomy/cele ... -70az.html

The above telescope was more of a toy but I want to be serious beginner now, therefore want to get an 8" deb telescope.

I researched and filtered these three telescopes, my budget is around $450 - $550 including the eyepiece kit

1) AT8D 8" F/5.9 Dobsonian reflector : https://www.astronomics.com/astro-tech- ... 18929.aspx

2) Orion Limited Edition SkyQuest XT8 Classic Dobsonian Bundle (The classicle is bit obselote in terms of built, focuser and some other points):

3) Zhumell 8-Inch Dobsonian Reflector Telescope: http://www.telescopes.com/telescopes/re ... escope.cfm

I know Orion is pretty proven but how is Astro-Tech and Zhumell? For Astro Tech, I researched the compnay and they seem to be more proffesssional handling real life space projects so it could be they are more "improved" with the design?

Focal lenght and aperture are the same in all. Which one would have better optics?

Would really appreciate some thoughts, advice and comments for my decision of buying one. Also would like some more suggestions.

Thanks!

Firoz

Hey Firoz, an 8inch Dobsonian is a great choice. I can't comment on the three you've chosen, but there are plenty of reviews online. There's a great international forum called Stargazers Lounge that I recommend to you. Whatever you buy, make sure you save £20 for a copy of Turn Left at Orion. I've had some of the most fun evenings of my life with an 8inch Dob, Turn Left and a woolly hat :D.
