I would like to collect a thread of free or very cheap astronomy software that you have experience of using. Web resources are also welcome. I get many questions about which programs to use for what, and it would be great to have a resource to point people towards. I have started the list with a few things off the top of my head, anything posted below I will incorporate as we go along.

Added IRIS, a fully-featured and FREE astronomy image program for windows. It's got more features than some of the commercial software out there, and is pretty simple to use.
